Material & Care

Care for the hand-carved surface.

ASKR Wares pieces begin as black ceramic forms, then each surface is carved by hand. Plates and cup forms receive a food-safe glaze layer after carving and are kiln-fired again to complete the surface for everyday use and display.

Material confidence

Three things to know before using your piece.

Crafted to linger in daily life. Here is what makes each surface unique, how it is crafted for safe everyday use, and how to preserve its hand-carved character.
01

Hand-carved ceramic body

Each piece is formed as ceramic, then carved by hand so the linework sits inside the surface rather than printed on top.

02

Food-safe glazed finish

Plates and cup forms receive a food-safe glaze layer after carving, then return to the kiln to complete the usable surface.

03

Small-batch surface variation

Minor differences in tone, carving depth, edge feel, and glaze movement are normal signs of small-batch fired ceramic work.

Use by object type

Different forms need different care.

Plates Food service and display

Use for everyday food service, small servings, styled table settings, or shelf display.

  • Hand wash with a soft sponge.
  • Dry before storage.
  • Avoid dishwasher, microwave, open flame, and sudden temperature shock.
Vessels & Cups Drink use and light serving

Use for everyday drinks, light food service, desk objects, flowers, or collected surfaces.

  • Rinse gently after use.
  • Hand wash and air dry fully.
  • Avoid boiling water shock, freezer use, dishwasher cycles, and abrasive cleaners.
Framed Pieces Display use only

Use as wall art, shelf art, mantel pieces, or layered objects in a collected interior.

  • Dust with a soft dry cloth.
  • Hang or place on stable surfaces.
  • Avoid moisture, direct outdoor exposure, unstable edges, and heavy impact.

Specific notes on an individual product page should always take priority over general care guidance.

Daily care

Keep the surface quiet, clean, and protected.

A simple guide for everyday care. Following these thoughtful steps will protect the hand-carved details, the smooth glazed finish, and the longevity of your ceramic piece.
Do Gentle handling
  • Hand wash with a soft sponge or cloth.
  • Use mild dish soap when needed.
  • Dry fully before storage or display.
  • Place framed pieces on stable walls or shelves.
Avoid Stress and abrasion
  • Dishwasher cycles and abrasive cleaners.
  • Microwave, oven, open flame, or freezer use.
  • Sudden temperature shock.
  • Soaking framed pieces or exposing them outdoors.

Surface variation

No two fired surfaces behave exactly the same.

Small differences are part of the object, but they should still feel intentional, stable, and consistent with the piece shown.
Carving depth

Hand-carved lines may appear slightly deeper, lighter, sharper, or softer from piece to piece.

Glaze movement

The fired glaze layer can create subtle shifts in sheen, pooling, edge tone, and surface feel.

Form and edge

Small changes in contour, rim feel, and underside finish are expected in small-batch ceramic work.

Color tone

Black ceramic surfaces may move between charcoal, warm black, and deep brown-black under different light.

Use boundary

General care is useful, but the product page comes first.

ASKR Wares includes different object types, sizes, and finishes. General guidance applies across the archive, while any specific care note on an individual product page should take priority.

When in doubt, treat the piece gently: hand wash only, avoid heat shock, and keep framed work away from moisture.
